Kim Hunter was born and raised in San Francisco, and holds a BA in Communications from Menlo College. She has traveled to more than 20 countries, including Russia, Indonesia, The Philippines, France, Italy, Bolivia and China.
Her love of languages began when she spent 6 months in Italy and had to learn Italian to get by. Although Kim took French classes in high school, French was always difficult for her, and she didn't enjoy the classes. What was the point in learning a language that she didn't think she could use?
Learning Italian, however, was different. Now she had to learn a language to survive. Kim discovered she learned the most when people took her around and helped her learn useful phrases for everyday life. Quickly, her Italian improved to the point that she could understand and carry on conversations. She’s never forgotten that learning language is easier when it’s meaningful.
Kim began teaching English to private students who enjoyed her “real life” language lessons. The students loved going on outings to San Francisco and other Bay Area locations to practice and learn English.
Eventually, Kim decided to learn Mandarin. That led to her traveling to China in the summer of 2012 to teach English. There, she learned a unique language learning technique: Total Physical Response, or TPR. Invented in the U.S., TPR uses movement, language, songs and games to teach English in a fun way.
Kim brought this useful technique to her English classes in the U.S., where she used it at a number of ESL schools. There she was reminded again that students want to learn how to use their English in real-life situations. Now Kim is bringing her approach to you!
